Marianne speaks Indonesian language, plays Central Javanese and Cirebon style gamelan and is a keen follower of keroncong music in Surakarta (Solo). This rich cultural centre has a strong community of performers who play and sing a variety of styles of keroncong in many different venues every night of the week.

Over the past ten years Marianne has been to rehearsals and performances, spoken to musicians and written about their music and experiences.
Keroncong, which used to be called the music of old people, is now being played by young and old and is thriving in Surakarta.
